Enroll in HSA Investments

Choose an HSA investment path and complete Hammock’s enrollment flow.

Hammock offers two ways to invest your HSA: Managed for you and Full brokerage. The choice is about how involved you want to be in managing investments.

Before you start

Check that you have an active HSA. If you’re unsure whether HSA investments are available to you, contact Support.

For Managed for you, you choose a cash reserve—the amount that stays available in your HSA before eligible cash is automatically invested. Your organization sets the lowest reserve you can choose; it is often $1,000, but can differ. It is not a minimum balance required to enroll or invest.

Opening an investment account usually takes a few minutes.

Choose your path

Managed for you

Answer questions about your time horizon, comfort with market changes, other savings, and how you expect to pay for care. Hammock suggests a risk profile from your answers, then you review the recommended portfolio and choose the cash you want to keep available in your HSA.

Auto-invest: Eligible HSA cash above your reserve is invested at market open. The minimum automatic investment is $25. You can update your reserve later. Raising it does not sell investments, but pauses new investing until your cash balance is above the new reserve.

Full brokerage

Build and manage your own portfolio by choosing and placing trades in supported U.S. stocks and ETFs. This path is self-directed; Hammock does not provide investment advice on it.

You can make changes later

After you choose a path, you can adjust investment selections over time within it.

Enroll

In Hammock, open Invest, choose your path, then select Get started.

  1. If you chose Managed for you, answer the investor-profile questions, review your suggested risk profile and recommended portfolio, then choose your cash reserve. If you chose Full brokerage, you will make your own investment selections after enrollment.
  2. Complete your brokerage profile.
  3. Review the agreements, disclosures, and acknowledgments, then sign electronically with your legal name.

After you sign

Your investment account will show as pending while it opens. This usually takes a few minutes.

You can find the documents you signed under Profile → Documents.

Next: Understand HSA Investment Fees.
